The Last of the Mohicans

This wasn’t the first film based on James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans, this marks the sixth time this story has been made for the big screen. Daniel Day-Lewis makes his mark in this 1992 version of the story directed by Michael Mann. The film also stars Madeleine Stowe and Russell Means who work with an amazing cast in this epic film. After this film was released it went on to win numerous awards worldwide including an Academy Award for Best Sound.

The story focuses on Nathaniel Poe “Hawkeye” (Day-Lewis) and his love for Cora Munro (Stowe) a British officer’s daughter. The two meet after Hawkeye and his adopted father save Cora and her sister from a band of indians aligned with the French. this leads them all to a doomed fort where Hawkeye saves Cora once again. As the French and British continue to do battle Hawkeye, Cora, and a small band of friends attempt to reach safety. They’re met with constant opposition which tests the courage of the group and the determination of Hawkeye.

This is an amazing film in many aspects. The visual beauty is stunning as the film seems to have found some segment of this country still untouched. Dante Spinotti captures the time period incredibly well as he did in L.A. Confidential and Public Enemy. The sets and costumes are also incredibly well done adding further to the authentic feel of the movie. The music also adds to the film and seems to fit perfectly with each scene. The battle scenes are incredible, each scene is filled with a gritty reality that adds to the emotion of the film. Finally, the acting is amazing. Daniel Day-Lewis is incredible and he’s backed up by an equally incredible cast. Madeleine Stowe makes her mark in this incredible portrayal of a woman in love who is losing everything.

If I were to make a top 100 films list this would definitely make the list. this film stands the test of time and feels like it might have been made this year despite being almost 20 years old. I would suggest this film for anyone who likes historical dramas or war films.

I would rate this as a 4.7 out of 5 stars.

  1. This is one of my favourite films. I don;t think there has been better chemistry between two leads and everyone had gravitas; the music was amazing and mann is a kinetic and pacy director. Also in my top pics.
