From 1934 to 1991, James Maitland Stewart stood out as one of the most popular and prolific actors of his time. Known by many as George Bailey from It’s a Wonderful Life, Jimmy Stewart was so much more than that singular, iconic role. During his career he won countless awards and accolades from the public as well as his peers in the film industry.
He was also an American patriot serving in World War II as a bomber pilot. During his service he was recognized with the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Croix de Guerre, and seven battle stars. There he also won over his peers with his selfless attitude towards duty where he continued to serve after the war. He completed his military career retiring as a Brigadiere General.
On the screen he seemed to be a regular guy with a predictable voice and gangly appearance. Yet with each performance he managed to capture the character and give us something unexpected. Over the next several months I will examine the films of this great actor. Beginning with Next Time We Love and ending with his last film An American Tail: Fievel Goes West. In between I will detail some of the highlights of a career than spanned almost six decades. Each of the films will allow you to see the range of skills possessed by Jimmy Stewart.
