I'm not a film critic, but I'll tell you what I think about the movies I watch. I enjoy understanding the history behind the movies we watch, as well as the collaborative effort necessary to produce movies.

SAG Reactions…

I’m increasingly frustrated and perplexed by the decisions of the voters this season. Here are the SAG winners and my thoughts.

Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture

The Artist
Bridesmaids
The Descendants
The Help
Midnight In Paris

My Thoughts: I don’t know that I actually care about this category. Perhaps it’s the fact that it seems made up, like the SAG needed something to set themselves apart from the other award shows. The Help isn’t one I’ve seen, but I suppose it might have been the favorite since a number of their cast have been up for other awards. The Oscars have Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain, and Viola Davis all nominated.

Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Leading Role

Demian Bichir, A Better Life
George Clooney, The Descendants
Leonardo DiCaprio, J. Edgar
Jean DuJardin, The Artist
Brad Pitt, Moneyball

My Thoughts: Well, at least the suspense in the Oscars over Best Actor is gone.

Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Leading Role

Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs
Viola Davis, The Help
Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
Tilda Swinton, We Need To Talk About Kevin
Michelle Williams, My Week With Marilyn

My Thoughts: Besides Michelle Williams, I don’t think anyone else stood a chance.

Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Supporting Role

Kenneth Branaugh, My Week With Marilyn
Armie Hammer, J. Edgar
Jonah Hill, Moneyball
Nick Nolte, Warrior
Christopher Plummer, Beginners

My Thoughts: I’m excited for Plummer to receive so much recognition after a magnificent career. I was pulling for Jonah Hill or Armie Hammer, but this didn’t disappoint me.

Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Supporting Role

Berenice Bejo, The Artist
Jessica Chastain, The Help
Melissa McCarthy, Bridesmaids
Janet McTeer, Albert Nobbs
Octavia Spencer, The Help

My Thoughts: I don’t know if this was ever in doubt amongst the critics I’ve followed. I think this is a foreshadowing of Oscar night.

I think that this award ceremony is the weak point in the awards season. Now the SAG Awards have become the mystic tea leaves of the Academy Awards. Whether or not the wins tonight will translate to Oscar night is yet to be seen, but I think they missed some great films this year. As with the Oscars and the Golden Globes I’m going to state my case with a list of movies that were either ignored altogether, or only given a slight look.

Driver           J. Edgar          The Ides of March          Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows          Crazy, Stupid, Love.

50/50           The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo          Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol          Captain America

Understand, I’m not saying that these are better or more deserving, well not all of them. I’m simply frustrated that some great performances have been ignored. When I see nominations for movies like Bridesmaids I begin to question whether or not I should care for the awards at all. Perhaps next year will bring justice and reason back to the people who vote for all these trophies.

The Help is one of a few films I have yet to see. From all accounts the film deserves some credit. As previously stated by some others, I think the SAG just confirmed that there is nothing suspenseful about the major acting categories at the Oscars.
