When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Directed by Rob Reiner
Starring: Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Carrie Fisher, Bruno Kirby
This 1989 movie might be one of the best romantic comedies ever made. Rob Reiner directed this movie which was nominated for Best Writing at the Academy Awards. Reiner has directed a wide variety of films. They include The Princess Bride, Misery, andA Few Good Men. This movie stars Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Carrie Fisher, and Bruno Kirby. Billy Crystal is a legendary comedian who has host the Oscars and starred in films like Forget Paris and Monsters Inc.. He has been nominated for countless awards including three Golden Globes. Meg Ryan has been in films that range from The Doors to Courage Under Fire to Sleepless in Seattle. She has also been nominated for three Golden Globes. Carrie Fisher will forever be known as Princess Leia Organa from the original Star Wars trilogy. She’s since had a career in film and television that included penning the screenplay for Postcards from the Edge. Bruno Kirby is another recognizable face in film. He’s had roles in The Godfather – Part II, The Basketball Diaries, and Sleepers.
Harry (Crystal) and Sally (Ryan) have known each other for years after meeting in college. Despite their obvious connection both of them have drifted into other relationships to avoid hurting their friendship. Over the years they continue to fail in their relationships and rely on one another to pick up the pieces. As they keep searching for true love they may have to risk their friendship.
This is an amazing movie. Reiner took this story in the right direction from the start. The film essentially focuses on the idea that men and women can’t be friends if they’ve had a sexual relationship. The actors all seem to have great chemistry. Crystal and Ryan go back and forth with incredible dialogue throughout the whole movie. From Sally ordering a salad, to Harry’s thoughts on sex, the film creates memorable moments throughout. The rest of the cast is all great as well. The movie seems to capture every awkward moment in the world of dating, relationships, and marriage.
The film also has a nice soundtrack that compliments the mood of the story. Visually, the movie is also good since it remains simple and keeps the movie easy to watch.
One of the nice touches are the cut away scenes with old couples speaking about their courtship. It adds to the emotion of the film and also feels like a quick break from the sometimes intense frustration of the characters in the film.
I couldn’t say that I have any criticisms for this movie. This feels like the perfect romantic comedy. I would encourage anyone who loves this genre to check this out. The movie definitely holds up more than 20 years after it’s release. I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars.
I LOVE this movie! Anyone who has not seen this really needs to get their hands on a copy and watch it! One of the best romantic comedies ever written hands down!
