Four Christmases (2008)
Directed by Seth Gordon
Starring: Vince Vaughn, Reese Witherspoon, Mary Steenburgen, Robert Duvall
Brad (Vaughn) and Kate (Witherspoon) are both the children of divorced parents and they’ve done a good job of avoiding Christmas at home for three years. Each year they’ve disappeared into the crush of holiday travelers and found their way to a wonderful vacation. This year they’re on their way to another tropical holiday when the weather wreaks havoc on their plans. When their families find out that they’ll be in town, the two are faced with a unique and troubling problem. How to see all four of their parents and loved ones on one Christmas day.
This is one Christmas movie that I never expected to be so much fun. Seth Gordon hasn’t done a lot of major films, but he did put together Horrible Bosses. This time he took on a Christmas movie and created something that feels little bit like a Wedding Crashers Christmas special. The movie stars some fairly big names including Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers), Reese Witherspoon, Mary Steenburgen, and Robert Duvall (Get Low). In the end it’s funny, and gross, and a little bit heart-warming.
This is a fun family film. It is a bit outrageous and it carries a good holiday message. Along the way it just has some really insane moments that work well when they come with Vaughn and Witherspoon on the receiving end. Their acting isn’t going to win any awards for this movie, but it does a good job and makes for a good movie. Add in the rest of the cast and this has become a surprise favorite for me during the holiday season.
You liked this one much more than I did. I wasn’t a fan of this film. Nice review.
