Iron Man 3 (2013)
Directed By Shane Black
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle
Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) hasn’t been the same since he teamed up with the Avengers to defeat an alien foe in New York City. Now as he searches for an explanation for the events of the past he’s faced with a new enemy. The Mandarin is a secretive terrorist with a deadly record who’s targeting the United States. Soon Aldrich Killian (Pearce) and other figures from his past emerge and the true threat presents itself. Now Tony is going to have to find the strength to wage war against his fiercest enemy yet.
Shane Black has been attached to numerous successful action films. From Lethal Weapon to The Last Boy Scout he’s been able to produce great films through his screenwriting. Iron Man 3 is only his second chance to direct, and he got lucky to have such a talented cast. Robert Downey Jr. (The Soloist), Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love), Guy Pearce (Lawless), Ben Kingsley (Gandhi), and Don Cheadle (Crash) are just some of the talents involved in this movie. The actors all do nicely with their roles, laying down a great foundation for this nicely written story.
The visuals in this movie are impressive to say the least. The camera work is great and the special effects are seamless. Bringing Iron Man to life is only part of the success. They also managed to bring a new kind of villain to life in ways that I had not seen before. Include the expected number of explosions and you’ve got a movie that’s fun to watch.
When sequels come out it presents the possibility that they won’t be able to succeed at the level of their predecessors. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Grease 2, and Star Wars – Episode 1: The Phantom Menace are all good examples. Thankfully Iron Man 3 doesn’t fit in with those movies. (If anything , it makes up for some of the failings of Iron Man 2.) This film has all the elements that made the first film great. The acting, visuals, and story all fit together to make an excellent movie. If you’re a fan of The Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, or any of the other Marvel films I suggest seeing this film. I give this one 4.7 out of 5 stars.
