I'm not a film critic, but I'll tell you what I think about the movies I watch. I enjoy understanding the history behind the movies we watch, as well as the collaborative effort necessary to produce movies.

Baby Driver

Baby Driver (2017)

Written and directed by Edgar Wright

Starring: Ansel Elgort, Jon Hamm, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, Eliza Gonzalez, Lily James

A young man desperately seeks a way out of the life of crime he has become an unwilling participant in.

Writer and director Edgar Wright (The World’s End) brought something unique to audiences with this 2017 action crime drama. The film features a cast of big names led by Ansel Elgort (Divergent). The film also stars Jon Hamm (The Town), Kevin Spacey (American Beauty), Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained), Eliza Gonzalez (Almost Thirty), and Lily James (Cinderella).

I’ve watched a lot of movies, and it’s not very often that a common story can be twisted in a way that truly surprises me. This was one of those films. Edgar Wright took a common heist film and turned it into something so unexpected that I was caught up from the very beginning. The film uses dialogue sparingly, and every word matters. This lets the world of the film become a character unto itself. Even the action written into this one feels unique. This is a nicely written film that finds every way to twist and turn a common story line into something new and exciting.

This film features nice performances from all of the main cast members. Ansel Elgort created a wonderful main character despite having limited dialogue to work with. He also did a nice job holding his own with the rest of the cast. Jon Hamm also did a wonderful job turning up the intensity with his role in this one. Kevin Spacey also helped to set the tone of the film with his performance in this movie. The great work by Jamie Foxx, Eliza Gonzalez, and Lily James just further added to the success of this one. Throughout the film there are a number of additional actors who add to the success of this one.

This movie looks great and sounds great. The production work is unique and fun, and the action is expertly filmed. Cinematographer Bill Pope (The Matrix) did a wonderful job giving this film a unique sensibility that plays up on the quirky nature of the story. The driving scenes are also captured wonderfully throughout this one. The music also adds something special to this one. The eclectic nature of the soundtrack even led Edgar Wright to consult with James Gunn to make sure they weren’t using any of the same songs as Gunn had chosen for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Overall, this is one of the more unique films I’ve seen in a long time.

Fans of the stars should make sure to see this one. It has so much to offer, from the unique story to the great performances. It’s also a good one for fans of action and crime films. I didn’t expect it, but this is definitely one of the best movies of 2017 so far. I give this one 4.5 out of 5 stars.
