Coco (2017)

Directed by Lee Unkrich, Adrian Molina

Story by Adrian Molina, Matthew Aldrich, Jason Katz, Lee Unkrich

Screenplay by Adrian Molina, Matthew Aldrich

Starring: Anthony Gonzalez, Gael Garcia Bernal, Benjamin Bratt

Miguel (Gonzalez) dreams of being a musician, but lives with a family where music is not allowed. Miguel finds his chance when he stumbles into the Land of the Dead in search of a famous musical ancestor.

This animated film is the product of another Disney/Pixar collaborations. The movie was directed by Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) and Adrian Molina (Monsters University). Molina and Unkrich also helped to write the story along with Jason Katz (Up) and Matthew Aldrich (Cleaner). The voice acting includes work by Anthony Gonzalez in his first major role. Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mamá También) and Benjamin Bratt (Doctor Strange) are just a few more of the talented stars in this one.

This is a wonderfully written story with a great emotional touch. The writing blends in cultural elements that really add a special feeling to the film. The dialogue throughout the movie is strong, mixing comedy in at a rapid pace. The film also has enough little twists and turns to appeal to a wider audience than some animated films might. The characters in this movie all have different attributes that make them memorable and unique. Overall, this is one of the most fun animated films I’ve seen in a long time. This is also a story with a heart.

The voice work in this one is great. The young Anthony Gonzalez does a great job playing the boy at the center of the story. He does a great job with a wide range of emotions throughout the story and also found great chemistry with the rest of the cast. That chemistry is most evident when Gael Garcia Bernal is involved. Bernal does a great job in his own role, but together the two make this one feel special. The film also features a great performance from Benjamin Bratt. The rest of the cast all bring nice performances to the film, helping to make this one great.

This movie looks incredible. Not only does the film create a fascinating world for the story, but it also creates a wide variety of unique and awesome characters. The movie also features a great score and some wonderful music.

Overall, this is a complete and solid film that I would recommend to just about anyone. If you’re a fan of animation this definitely one you should see. I would also make sure to see it if you like the stars. I give this one 4.8 out of 5 stars.
