Directed by Jon Watts

Based on characters created by Stan Lee, Steve Ditko

Written by Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers

Starring: Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Jake Gyllenhaal, Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, Jon Favreau

After the defeat of Thanos, Spider-Man (Holland) is faced with a bigger role in defending the planet. He’s quickly put to the test when a new and mysterious threat surfaces.

This is the first post-Endgame movie added to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The characters in this one are based on the creative works by Stan Lee (Black Panther) and Steve Ditko (Doctor Strange). The script was written by Chris McKenna (Ant-Man and the Wasp) and Erik Sommers (The LEGO Batman Movie), and Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming) was chosen to direct. Tom Holland (The Impossible) leads a cast that includes the returning stars Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction), Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny), Zendaya (The Greatest Showman), and Jon Favreau (The Wolf of Wall Street). The biggest new name that joined the cast is Jake Gyllenhaal (Zodiac).

It must’ve been a major challenge to follow up on the events of Avengers: Endgame. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers had combined their efforts to write Spider-Man: Homecoming, and they came back together to follow it up. The story is the start of a new chapter for Spider-Man. It balances the drama and the action with a good amount of laughs early on. With Peter Parker returning to life as a high school student, there are a number of fun moments that help to highlight the differences between his two lives. There are some moments that seem to feel a little corny, but they’re not a major issue. The relationships between the established characters from the previous MCU films are given new depth. There is also a really interesting villain who helps to raise the stakes. Instead of ignoring the events of Endgame, this one takes a deeper look at the fallout. There are a number of twists and turns that really keep this one fun and unpredictable.

The actors did a great job throughout this one. Tom Holland got back in the Spider suit for his next adventure, and does a great job anchoring the film. He’s had Jon Favreau, Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, and Samuel L. Jackson back with him to bring this one to life. This group of characters helps to bring the audience back into a very familiar world. Each of them does a nice job capturing the deep emotions that came from the Endgame conclusion. Jake Gyllenhaal joins the MCU in this one, with an excellent performance that really adds a lot to the film. His chemistry with the rest of the cast is a big part of the overall success of this story. The fans won’t be disappointed by the performances in this one.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has set a high bar for the way their films look and sound. They have succeeded in maintaining that quality throughout all of their films. This film can be included in that statement. The visuals in this film are a great mix of solid cinematography and intense CGI.  The editing keeps things moving, and the audio mix is awesome.

The fans of the MCU have been treated to a roller coaster over the past 11 years. Starting with Iron Man, the series has created a unique world of superheroes and terrifying villains. This film marks a unique shift in the universe, and the next generation of films begins to take shape. Fans of the Marvel films should make sure to check this one out. I would also suggest this to anyone who loves great action and an entertaining story. I give this one 4.4 out of 5 stars.
