Best Story
Without a screenplay there is nothing for an actor to say or do. Without a screenplay there is nothing for a director to work from. Behind every great film is a great screenplay, there’s no exception to the rule. Over the years writers built the framework for great movies to be created from. This award was the first to recognize writing at the Oscars. It lasted until 1957, when it was replaced by the award for Best Original Screenplay which had been created in 1940.
