A great film needs a great star, and often a great star needs someone to strengthen the film. The Best Supporting Actor award is designed to honor the strong actor behind the lead. Over the years this has been awarded to great actors like Walter Brennan, Michael Caine, and Jason Robards. Brennan holds the record with three wins as Best Supporting Actor. He is also among the small group of men to be nominated four times for the award. This list also includes Arthur Kennedy, Jack Nicholson, and Claude Rains. Unlike the Best Actor category this one came later; beginning in 1936.
